Old Girl Talk By Susan LeGree Fort Pierce

Local Author: LeGree explores female experience

By TCPalm Staff

Sunday, July 13, 2008

Fort Pierce resident Susan "Sam" LeGree details a hodgepodge of feminine experiences in the book "Old Girl Talk," Outskirts Press, $13.95, where things like menopause, becoming your mother and pantyhose are subjects for prose.

The 22-short- chapter volume draws from Le- Gree's experiences and conversations among women who don't mind laughing at themselves.

"I've always been observant. I felt I had the artist's eye," said LeGree, 71.

A retired executive secretary, LeGree became a freelance reporter in 1990 after moving to Florida. "I like writing what I enjoy," she said.

"Champagne in a Plastic Glass," AuthorHouse, $12.95, her first collection of essays, free verse and photography, was published in 2005; her latest book came out in 2007. Both books are available on amazon.com, and at Barnes & Noble and Target stores.

LeGree is publishing her third book this summer. "Taking Time: To Live, Laugh, Love and Leave" will include 200 free-verse poems on unrequited love and mortality, but LeGree promises the poetry will be light.

Thank You Notes

"There are Angels Among Us"

Thank you, Len Norris, Custom Air and all those who have made it possible to replace my air conditioner.  I'm so overwhelmed and awed, by the generosity of so many -- Some anonymous, some I don't even have the pleasure of knowing; and my family and dear friends.

In Jesus name, may God bless you with good health, happiness and "safe harbor from all the storms of life."

Most sincerely and so very gratefully

This big fund raiser will take place November 14 (for Golden Ponders only) and 15 & 16 for everyone.

Donations for the flea market have been coming in every week. Larger items are always being sold at the south clubhouse due to lack of storage space. We take just about anything except couches, loveseats and clothes. The donation box is in the corner of the north clubhouse. If you have a lot of stuff just call Nelson Payne at 489-0721 and he will gladly pick it up.

Remember we will have a limited amount of booth rentals for $15 where you can sell your own stuff and collect your own money. Call Joan Payne at the above number for more details.

MANAGERS NOTES

I want to thank everyone for bringing items of concern to my attention. However, it is difficult to respond if you do not sign your name.

YARD WASTE & RECYCLING FEE- We have finally determined the yard waste/recycling fee for Sept. 1, 2008 – August 31, 2009 as $43.64. I am sorry it took so long to determine this but they are adding a fuel surcharge to our bills that changes regularly. Please make out the check to Golden Ponds. It is due September 1st. Please do not include it in the rent as it goes into a different account.

WELCOME TO OUR LATEST RESIDENTS –

Mary Therrien, 9975 Gatsby Lane. She is a friend of the Merrills and her hometown is Amesbury, MA.

Robert & Dee Karpinen, 1699 Booth Bay Drive. They are from Davie, FL

Tony & Bonnie Ronza, 1824 Walden Pond Dr. They are from Brighton, Ontario Canada and are friends of Tom Robertson and Vikki Benedict.

R.V. STORAGE AREA – I have been advised by the Department of Revenue that I must now collect sales tax for the storage area. The amount will be 6.5%. I have sent out a letter to the present users advising them of this.

The Summer Kitchen is progressing. I am sure we will be very happy with the results.

Change of Address forms expire in six (6) months. You may need to make out a new one to be sure you don’t miss any of your mail.

My plea to someone to assist the homeowners with the disposition of American Flags has been answered.

Russell Osbaldeston, 1881 Walden Pond Dr., (Corner of Walden and Golden Ponds), 467-1047, has told me that he would be more than happy to assist anyone with this. He has connections to take care of it. Thank you Russell! I also understand that Ralph Carabin also will take care of them for you.

Because we are now getting rain on a regular basis (every day), everything is growing more than you could imagine. I have discovered that some of the people doing weed whacking in the park are only doing it every other week, if then. This is fine when there is no growth but now that there is, the yards should be done after each mowing. I will say that a few of them are doing it after each mowing and you can certainly tell when you go down the street the ones that are and are not. When you hire someone, please inquire how many times a month they are doing it. Just divide two into what you are paying and per time becomes pretty expensive. The residents that are left in the park do not like to look at a yard that is overgrown because of no weed whacking being done. It also is not fair for the weed whackers that are doing it after each mowing.

Also, - turn those sprinklers off!!!!

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Just a few short days remain to sign up for the National Nite Out Dinner and

Festivities. Don't forget, July 28, is the deadline.

With the high price of gas more people are

going back to bicycles. Make sure you are always safe and ride with caution:

Always wear a helmet and protective clothing.

Wear reflective markings on your clothes.

Be careful in rain and on gravel, they can be slick. Make sure your bike is mechanically sound.

Please keep watching and checking on your friends and neighbors homes.

Tips for securing your home:

Keep windows and doors locked when not home.

Create the illusion of occupancy. Always acknowledge someone who knocks or rings your doorbell but DO NOT open the door to strangers. When in doubt don't hesitate to call 911.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT - What's it all about?

The History of NATW and National Night Out

The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) is a nonprofit, crime prevention organization which works in cooperation with thousands of crime watch groups and law enforcement agencies throughout the country. Since 1981, NATW has been dedicated to the development, growth and maintenance of organized crime and drug prevention programs nationwide. NATW's network has grown to include over 6,500 crime, drug and violence prevention organizations.

National Night Out, 'America's Night Out Against Crime;' was introduced by the Association in 1984. The program was the brainchild of NATW Executive Director Matt A. Peskin.

In an effort to heighten awareness and strengthen participation in local anticrime efforts, Peskin felt that a high profile, high-impact type of crime prevention event was needed nationally. At that time, he noted that in a typical ‘crime watch community’, only 5 to 7% of the residents were participating actively. Due to the growth and success of these programs, he felt this percentage was too low. Subsequently, he proposed a national program, which would be coordinated by local crime prevention agencies and organizations - but that would involve entire communities at one time. The first National Night Out was introduced early in 1984 - with the event culminating on the first Tuesday in August.

That first year, 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out. Nationwide, 2.5 million Americans took part in 1984. The seed had been planted. In subsequent years, participation has grown steadily. The 24Th Annual National Night Out last August involved 35.4 million people in 11,310 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2008 will culminate on August 5Th. Over 12,000 communities are expected to take part.

While the traditional 'lights on' and front porch vigils remain a part of NNO, activities have expanded considerably over the years to include block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies and meetings.

Peskin said, "It's a wonderful opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie. While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out does represent the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places throughout the year.

It [NNO] is a night to celebrate safety and crime prevention successes - and to expand and strengthen programs for the next 364 days."

The members of the Neighborhood Watch and the COP would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sheriff's Department and all the people that have contributed their time, money and their expertise in organizing this event at Golden Ponds. Enjoy the cookout and remember to have good neighbors we must be a good neighbor.
