NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Thieves are using high-tech skimmers to steal account information at automatic teller machines — and victims don't know they have a problem until they see their statements. Cyber security expert Brian Krebs tracks ATM scams on his blog and he says new technology is helping scammers steal even more of your information at ATMs. "If it's done correctly you would not notice that anything looks amiss," Krebs says. In a traditional skimming scam, thieves place a card-skimming device into the card insertion slot. The skimmer can steal account information stored on the magnetic strip on back of the card when it is dipped into the machine. The new twist? Clear plastic overlays also are placed on top of the PIN pad to capture personal identification numbers. Also, some skimmers can text the stolen bank account information and PINs directly to the scammer so that person never has to return to the scene of the crime. "The beauty of this is the thief can be down the street at a coffee house or he can be halfway around the world," Krebs says. "As long as he has a working cell signal, he can get the information sent to him." The good news for consumers: If a thief steals money from your accounts or makes fraudulent charges, banks likely will make good on the problem. For example, Wachovia's policy states: "Customers affected by any type of fraud are fully reimbursed." However, skimmer scams make it even more critical that consumers check bank statements for unusual activity and report it to their bank as quickly as possible.
Skimmers are also used at gas stations.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 22ND at 4:30pm we will have our last covered dish supper of the summer. Sign up on the bulletin board with your name and what you will bring. We will collect $1 per person at the door. The main meat dish for this supper will be pulled pork. A short 'remember when' trivia will follow dessert. Helen & Glen Cope will be co-chairpersons for August. JULY18th was our 3rd Covered Dish Supper of the summer. The highlight of the dessert table was an anniversary cake flanked by two wedding pictures from the 50's. The two couples we were honoring were Gay & Bob Newman married 53 years on July 20th and Joan & Nelson married 55 years on July 10th. These two couples hosted the covered dish supper and shared stories about life back then. Liz Williams also joined in with some of her memories as well as an update on how to play Bunco at the upcoming event on August14th. JUNE 27th we had a great Covered Dish feast as well as a very successful 'fun auction'. Auctioneer Phil Morneault had us laughing on more then one item that was brought up for bid. Unlike other auctions, people actually went home with dime and quarter purchases. Some of the bidding was very competitive. A fun time was had by all attending. Fran & Phil Morneault were co-chairpersons for this event. Joan & Nelson Payne-Covered Dish Chairpersons

WELCOME TO OUR
NEWEST RESIDENT – Lynda Booth, 1860 Stonybrook Drive. She has lived in the Fort Pierce area before and is a friend of Gene Smith. She looks forward to being involved.
I have been asked to remind everyone that there is no diving and no jumping in the pool. Unfortunately, like everything else, the people messages are meant for, do not read my column.
Waste Pro has provided me with enough brochures for every home in the park explaining their holidays, and pertinent information about recycling & yard waste. The brochures are located on the front table in the north clubhouse as you come in the door. Feel free to pick one up.
A reminder that all who drive your golf cart should be at least 16 years of age, regardless if an adult is with them. We have had accidents in the past when the driver was under 16 with the adult in the passenger seat. Thank you for your cooperation.
If anyone has a friend that may be interested in a home in Golden Ponds, this is the time for them to visit and purchase. Mr. Barding is very anxious to make a deal on the new model so take him up on what he said!
For those that have homes for sale, if you advertise in your local paper(s) and we sell your home, we will reimburse you for the ad. It may be worth your effort.
Sometime soon, we will have to shut the spa down for a period of time to install a Federal required vacuum release system. I will post the dates of closing as soon as I know what they are. Sorry, but we must comply. I know this is a repeat but the county is giving our contractor a hard time in issuing the permits.
Another reminder that Golden Ponds facilities are for Golden Ponds residents and their guests. A guest is defined as someone staying in your home overnight from out of the area. This includes the pool, tennis courts, etc.
Motherly advice – if you have a driver’s license renewal due soon, plan to make your appointment way ahead of time because there could be delays and long waits to accomplish this.
I want to thank those that have brought their visitors in to meet me or have their visitors stop by to introduce themselves. It is nice to know who is using our facilities.
News from the swimming pool/spa. We now have a new mermaid but I don’t know if you call “him” a mermaid as he is a man. Also, there is a substitute for one of our mermaids that is recovering from knee surgery. How does a mermaid have knee problems?
That’s all for this month!
